Pruning for Sidewalk and Street Clearance

Posted on July 20, 2018 at 3:43 PM by Colin Heyne

Tree clearance heightsSpring marks the time of the year when trees send out new shoot growth to expand their canopies. In a lot of cases this means the tree will begin to hang lower and interfere with both pedestrians and vehicles that are passing by.  Consequently, now is the best time to take five minutes to go outside, enjoy the nice weather, and examine your tree. The City of San José requires property owners to maintain both private and street trees with 8 feet of clearance over the sidewalk and 14 feet of clearance over the roadway. If your trees don't meet these requirements, you should address them as soon as possible. To obtain a "No fee" Street Tree Pruning Permit, contact the City of San José Trees and Sidewalk section at 408-794-1901 or email treesandsidewalks@sanjoseca.gov to start the permit process.
