Camphor trees on Westwood Ave, San Jose
In the City of San José, street trees are typically located in the park strip area between the sidewalk and the curb, but any tree planted within the first 10 feet of the curb line could be considered a street treeSection 13.28.400 of San José Municipal Code assigns responsibility for maintenance for street trees to the adjacent property owners. Further, property owners are also required to obtain a permit from the Department of Transportation before performing any planting, pruning, or removal of a street tree (Municipal Code 13.28.300 and 13.28.310).

To improve compliance and ensure work is
performed in compliance with industry standards and best management practice, DOT provides all street tree permits at no cost to the property owners. To request a permit for addressing your street tree, please call 408-794-1901email treesandsidewalks@sanjoseca.gov ovisit the City's permit website for more information.
