Tree of the Month - Sequoia Sempervirens

Posted on October 1, 2018 at 12:15 PM by Colin Heyne

Sequoia sempervirens

The Tree of the Month for October is Sequoia sempervirens, or the coast redwood. This species is known for being the tallest of all living trees in the world. It is a habitat for many other species and has a unique ecosystem in the upper canopy. Redwoods rely on fog for 13-45% of their total annual water consumption, making them not well suited as inland urban trees, where they tend to struggle significantly more than in coastal locations. For more information check out the Cal Poly SelecTree website.
