Over the years, community-service traditions such as serving meals and building homes have evolved, and social responsibility has expanded to include creating technology solutions to address social problems on a global scale. In conjunction with the County of Santa Clara and its jurisdictions, the City of San José (Housing Department) will conduct the biennial Homeless Count that will take place on Tuesday, January 29 and Wednesday, January 30. Volunteers are needed for this important effort. The purpose of the Homeless Count and Survey is to understand the number and characteristics of people sleeping in shelters, on the street, and in other places not meant for human habitation. If you choose to volunteer, please note the following: 1.)Volunteers will team up with homeless or formerly homeless guides, drive around designated areas of the county, and visually count homeless persons from 5:30 a.m. until 11 a.m. (on one or both days) 2.) Volunteers are required to have a vehicle. 3.) Volunteers may be required to walk a portion up to two miles of the census route. 4.) Volunteers will be required to attend a one hour training prior to count day.
