With summer around the corner, hikers regularly visit Alum Rock Park and other Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services trails. The heat also brings out rattlesnakes and ticks. If you see a snake, stop and keep your distance. Never attempt to touch, catch, kill or scare it away. In the rare case of a snake bite, remain calm and slowly move away from the snake. DO NOT apply a cold pack, tourniquet, or cut the bite and attempt to suck out the venom. Call 9-1-1 or send someone for help. To prevent irritation and infection from ticks, check your body for ticks and bathe soon after being outdoors. If you find a tick and cannot completely remove its mouth parts, contact a doctor.
