Meds in the Bin, We All Win!

Blue drop-off bin for unwanted or expired medicine.
Do you have unused or expired medicine? Take it to a drop-off bin near you!

Pollution Prevention Week, September 16-22, is a great reminder to residents to prevent pollution before it begins. Do your part by safely disposing of your unused or expired medicines for free at a drop-off bin location.

The San José-Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility plays an important role in treating our wastewater to keep our Bay clean. When unused or expired medicines are put down the drain or flushed down the toilet, they flow through the sanitary system to the wastewater facility. Even after advanced treatment, trace amounts may pass through the wastewater facility and be released into San Francisco Bay, threatening public health and the environment.

Let’s #KeepSJClean! Don’t flush medications down the toilet, place them down the drain, or put them in the garbage. Take unwanted medicine to a drop-off bin near you, and let others know by posting on social media using the hashtag, #P2Week! Remember: Meds in the bin, we all win!
