Visitors on the boardwalk leading to Don Edwards Wildlife Refuge

Slow the Flow

Take your students on a field trip to the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge Environmental Education Center in Alviso. Through classroom presentations, teacher-led activities and a field trip to the Refuge, students explore the concepts of water use, wastewater treatment, habitat preservation, and watershed stewardship. Curriculum is aligned to California content standards.

Can't make it to the Center? Contact the Refuge to discuss options for presentations at your classroom or meeting place.

Cost: Free to teachers of grades 5 to 12 in schools located in San José, Santa Clara, Milpitas, Cupertino, Campbell, Los Gatos, Saratoga, or Monte Sereno.

Creeks Come to Class

In this popular curriculum-based program, San José Park Rangers visit classrooms and conduct exciting activities focused on preventing pollution to our neighborhood creeks. “The classroom presentation was totally grade appropriate and captivated every student’s attention,” according to one fifth grade teacher.

San José Park Rangers can also set up for science fairs or small group school assemblies.

Cost: Free to San José teachers.

Recycle Plus

The four garbage and recycling haulers that service San José households provide educational resources to San José schools. Some provide facility tours or presentations. Visit their Web sites to learn more about their offerings.

The Santa Clara County Office of Education Library Services Division maintains an online Educational Resource Directory where you can search for resources by type, such as field trip or classroom presentation.
