Basic, Supplemental, and Dependent life insurance coverage, including accidental death & dismemberment coverage (AD&D), is provided through the City’s group policy with The Standard Insurance Company.
The City of San Jose pays for basic coverage in the following amounts:
- Sworn (Police/Fire) - $10,000
- Non Sworn (Non Management) - $20,000
- Management - 2x Annual Salary
Supplemental voluntary life insurance is also available and is 100% employee paid. Non-management employees are eligible for a maximum of four (4x) times annual salary in supplemental coverage, and management employees are eligible to enroll in up to two (2x) times their salary in supplemental coverage.
As new hires, employees can enroll in supplemental coverage equal to one (1x) or two (2x) times annual salary with their new hire enrollment and are eligible for guaranteed issue of the supplemental policy, subject to a $300,000 maximum.
In summary, the following supplemental life insurance coverage levels are available:
- Sworn/Non-Sworn (Non Management) - 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x salary
- Management - 1x or 2x salary
Eligible active employees may elect Dependent life coverage for a spouse or domestic partner and child in multiples of $2,000 up to a maximum of $10,000 but not to exceed 50% of the combined Basic and Supplemental coverage.
Available dependent life insurance coverage levels are:
- $2,000
- $4,000
- $6,000
- $8,000
- $10,000
Eligibility
Full-time (except Temporary Unclassified) benefited employees are automatically enrolled in the City’s basic life insurance plan and are eligible to enroll in the voluntary and dependent life insurance coverages.
Cost
Life insurance premiums for the City of San José are based on a semi-monthly cost per employee per $1,000 of coverage carried.
