PROCESS AND SYSTEMS
SPECIALIST II (l363)
CLASS PURPOSE
Under general supervision, performs programming
and related work of moderate difficulty in supporting the
operation of the on-line/off-line computer systems used for
control and/or study of municipal processes. Performs related
work as required.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one
position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the
examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)
- Operates a process control computer system
with either machine in on-line or off-line mode.
- Acquires advanced skills and knowledge of
process control applications through on-the-job training
classes.
- Develops, modifies, and debugs programs to
meet system requirements by utilizing BASIC, FORTRAN, and
software packages.
- Identifies system problems by employing
hardware and software diagnostic programs.
- Interfaces with operators and contractors
as necessary.
- Verifies nature of system malfunctions and
either rectifies them or provides information required to
effect repairs.
- Maintains system documentation and tape
library to support special data searches and statistical
analysis projects.
- Maintains the computer spare part and
equipment storage, security, and operational status.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the journey level in the Water
Pollution Control Computer Operations/Process and Systems
Specialist series. The incumbent of this class develops the
advanced skills and knowledge required to perform those typical
duties described above. An incumbent provides technical guidance
to the lower class of Process and Systems Specialist I, and is
supervised by a Senior Process and Systems Specialist or by the
Process and Systems Supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of principles and practices of
computer programming.
- Knowledge of and ability to use algebraic
techniques.
- Ability to write computer programs of
average difficulty in at least one language.
- Ability to solve systems control problems
in a logical manner.
- Ability to organize projects and manage
time effectively.
- Ability to express oneself clearly and
concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain
effective working relationships with others at the plant.
Competency Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of all phases of wastewater
treatment.
- Knowledge of process control, all computer
systems packages, and all phases of computer control.
- Knowledge of supervision and training.
- Ability to design and write complex
programs in all languages used currently.
- Ability to assist in developing training
programs designed for presentation to plant personnel.
- Ability to supervise and lead others.
- Ability to establish and maintain
effective working relations with contractors.
Education
Successful completion of a Bachelor's Degree
from an accredited college or university in Computer Science,
Industrial or Chemical Engineering, Physical Science, or a
closely related field.
Experience
Two (2) years of increasingly responsible
experience in software/hardware technical support, computer
programming and/or operating systems networking or systems
control.
