MECHANICAL PARTS ASSISTANT (1531)
CLASS PURPOSE
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)
Picks up and delivers automotive and maintenance vehicle parts, accessories and supplies needed for repairs and overhauls of gas and diesel powered automotive vehicles, maintenance vehicles, construction and fire equipment.
Receives and issues automotive and maintenance vehicle parts, accessories and supplies.
Operates motor vehicle in picking up and delivering automotive and maintenance vehicle parts.
Determines parts and supply requirements from general item descriptions, catalogs, manuals, blueprints, charts, and specifications.
Completes stores requisitions, work orders and other routine forms used by the mechanical parts storerooms and enters invoice data into the computer terminal.
Assists Mechanical Parts Worker in the ordering and inspection of automotive and maintenance vehicles parts and accessories.
Assists in contacting other City departments and vendors and suppliers for parts and supplies.
Performs routine stockwork such as stocking shelves and storing parts.
Performs routine housekeeping functions of storeroom.
May perform shift work.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of common automotive parts, tools, supplies, and equipment.
Knowledge of basic English.
Ability to compute simple arithmetic functions accurately.
Ability to read, write and understand English.
Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written instructions.
Ability to lift and carry moderately heavy and bulky items.
Ability to operate light automotive equipment and vehicles.
Competency Knowledges, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of stock handling procedures.
Knowledge of routine ordering procedures.
Knowledge of safe methods of handling and storing a variety of automotive, construction and fire fighting parts, supplies and equipment.
Knowledge of inventory recordkeeping procedures.
Knowledge of sources of supplies, parts and equipment used in automotive and other equipment repair.
Knowledge of the parts, supplies and equipment used in automotive, construction and fire equipment.
Knowledge of normal wear processes of automotive, construction and fire equipment.
Knowledge of automotive terminology.
Ability to use automotive parts catalogs, manuals, blueprints, charts, and specifications.
Ability to input into a computer terminal.
