FIRE ENGINEER (2312)
CLASS PURPOSE
Drives, operates, and maintains fire equipment and apparatus. Assists in the suppression of fires, the conduct of fire prevention programs, and the enforcement of fire prevention codes and ordinances. Does related work.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)
- Responds to fire and other emergency alarms by driving assigned vehicle to required location.
- Operates fire equipment and otherwise assists in the suppression of fires and in the protection of life and property.
- Assumes primary responsibility for the servicing and maintenance of assigned fire equipment.
- Assists in the maintenance of fire station and surrounding grounds.
- Participates in the continuing training and instruction program by individual study of technical material and attendance at scheduled drills and classes.
- Instructs other fire personnel in the operation and care of fire apparatus and related equipment.
- Inspects buildings, theaters, schools, hospitals, factories, places of public assemblage and storage, and residential units to determine and enforce compliance with safety laws and ordinances.
- Studies and becomes familiar with district streets, fire hydrants, building occupancy and contents, and the location of fire alarm boxes.
- Compiles and submits information and reports on equipment runs, accidents, gas and oil usage, apparatus inspections, tests, and conditions.
- Conducts spring and fall home fire inspections; participates in monthly distribution of emergency telephone stickers, formulation of pre-fire plans of target hazards, school and hospital fire drills, bicycle licensing, voter registration, and various other community relations activities.
- Is subject to emergency call while off duty.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Incumbents of this class typically receive supervision from the class of Fire Captain. In general, the duties and responsibilities, work sites, working conditions, scope and levels of skills and responsibility required are identical with those of the class of Firefighter (2311), and reference may be made to that specification. In addition, incumbents are expected to successfully complete special schooling in motors, pumps, fire service hydraulics, and related special studies.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of fire equipment and apparatus.
- Knowledge of technical fire fighting techniques and the principles of hydraulics as applied to fire suppression.
- Knowledge of modern fire fighting methods.
- Knowledge of fire prevention and safety principles; methods, rules, codes, regulations and ordinances; and departmental rules and regulations.
- Ability to perform maintenance and minor mechanical repairs to equipment and apparatus.
- Ability to react quickly, calmly, and efficiently in emergency situations.
- Ability to recognize fire hazards common to places of public assemblage and to manufacturing and residential buildings.
- Ability to render first aid as required.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to work effectively and harmoniously with others.
Education
Graduation from high school or equivalent (General Education Development [G.E.D.] or California Proficiency Certificate).
Experience
Two years of experience as a Firefighter in the City of San Jose Fire Department.
Acceptable Substitutions
None.
License/Certificates
A valid State of California Class B driver's license with applicable endorsements is an employment requirement prior to being appointed to the classification of Fire Engineer in the City of San Jose, and must be maintained continually as a condition of employment.
