CLASS SUMMARY:

Incumbents are responsible supervising and guiding senior and journey level electricians and other employees engaged in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems and equipment. Duties might include: planning, scheduling, and evaluating work performed by senior and journey level electricians and other assigned staff; establishing and maintaining a preventive maintenance schedule; establishing and coordinating a safety program for electrical shop staff; reviewing and interpreting blueprints, electrical diagrams, and line specifications; inspecting and troubleshooting signal controllers, electroliers, motors, timers and other electrical equipment to identify needed repairs; estimating parts, materials, and staff hours required for work to be performed; requisitioning and maintaining adequate electrical supplies, materials, and parts; receiving and evaluating work orders and requests for new or modified electrical installations; assigning priorities to work order requests; assigning staff to perform emergency repairs; supervising the installation, modification and maintenance of traffic signal, fire alarm, lighting, and power systems; supervising the design, installation, and maintenance of telemetering systems; supervising the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical pump equipment and controls; Supervises the installation, modification and maintenance of audio systems in City buildings; supervising the repair and maintenance of engine generator power plants; supervising the repair and maintenance of transmission and power distribution equipment; supervising the repair of motors up to 4000 H.P. and magnetic speed control units; preparing activity reports, work progress reports, accident reports, and time and material records; and submitting statistics in report form.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

The Electrician, Supervisor is the third level of a three-level electrician series. The Electrician, Supervisor is distinguished from the Electrician, Senior by its full supervisory responsibilities.

Training and Experience (positions in this class typically require):

Completion of an approved apprenticeship program and two years of lead electrician experience comparable to an Electrician, Senior in the City of San Jose; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

Licensing Requirements (positions in this class typically require):

  • Valid California Driver’s License;
  • Electrician License;

Depending on designated area of assignment, positions may require:

  • Grade I Water Treatment Certification.

Knowledge (position requirements at entry):

Knowledge of:

  • Supervision principles and practices;
  • Tools, techniques, and materials of the electrical trade;
  • Devices and mechanisms used in fire alarms, communication, underground cable work, traffic signals, pumping systems and street light systems;
  • Fundamentals of electricity and electronics, including solid-state and micro processors;
  • Safety codes, rules and regulations;
  • National Electrical Codes;
  • Operations and maintenance of traffic signals, street lighting and associated electrical equipment.
  • Various building trade skills required in building maintenance(e.g. carpentry, HVAC, etc).

   Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, work space restrictions and intense noises.
