EQUIPMENT MECHANIC ASSISTANT I (3311)
CLASS PURPOSE
Under general supervision, performs work of routine difficulty in the inspection, servicing, and minor repair of automotive and construction equipment. Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)
- Provides routine servicing, fueling and safety inspection to City Vehicles; performs complete lubrications, changing filters when necessary.
- Assists other classifications and learns fundamentals of automotive electrical installation, welding, metal fabrication, machining and mechanical repairs.
- Inspects fan and alternator belts for wear and damage and makes adjustments and replacements; inspects, balances, adjusts, repairs and replaces tires.
- Checks engines, transmissions, and differentials for leaks and cracks; checks exhaust systems for leaks and loose hangers.
- Inspects smog control systems, manifold heat control valves, and cooling systems for leaks and rust.
- Inspects bodies, frames, suspension and running gears, electrical systems, brake hoses, and disc brake pads for defects, wear, and damage.
- Makes road calls to perform minor repairs; dispatches tow trucks to disabled vehicles.
- Adjusts or repairs door handles, latches, battery cables, radiator and heater hoses, and smog valves; replaces arm rests, and flasher units.
- Repairs minor body damage, shotgun holders, and spotlights.
- Completes work order forms; drives equipment to service areas.
- Washes and cleans vehicles and other mechanized equipment.
- Issues City vehicles to City employees including substitute police vehicles to Police Officers.
- Completes and maintains forms noting servicing and issuance of vehicles.
- Replaces gutter brooms and main brooms on power sweepers.
- Collects coins in parking meters.
- Performs lubrication, adjustment, minor repair and replacement of components in parking meters.
- Operates computer terminal to check records and enter data related to vehicle maintenance.
- Picks up, delivers and issues automotive truck parts as needed.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
An incumbent of this class is responsible for performing inspections, servicing, making minor repairs and adjustments to automotive equipment, including construction equipment. This class differs from Equipment Mechanic Assistant II in that the latter performs more advanced servicing and installation functions and may provide lead direction to other employees.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of common automotive parts and supplies.
- Knowledge of safety practices and procedures to be observed in work.
- Skill in using mechanic's tools and lubricating equipment.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to recognize conditions in automotive equipment which need attention or which can be safety hazards.
Competency Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of simple mechanical repairs and installation of automotive equipment.
- Ability to input to computer terminal.
- Ability to keep required records.
- Ability to prepare operation reports.
- Ability to obtain a City driving permit.
Education
Completion of high school or GED.
Experience
Two years of experience in lubrication, servicing, and installation of automotive equipment.

Licenses/Certificates
- Possession of a valid California driver's license at all times is a condition of employment.
- As a condition of employment in some designated positions, possession of a valid State of California Class A or B driver's license with applicable endorsements may be required in the performance of job duties.
