AQUATICS COORDINATOR,
THERAPEUTICS (PART-TIME) (6148)
CLASS PURPOSE
Under general supervision, performs
work of moderate difficulty in developing and managing a comprehensive adapted aquatics program
designed to provide therapeutic recreation services for disabled persons. Performs related work as
required.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one
position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may
be performed.)
- Identifies and determines recreation
and therapeutic needs of clientele to include making surveys and assessing
individual and group capabilities and requirements.
- Establishes aquatics classes,
including negotiating and contracting with instructors, setting class fees
and charges; evaluating
programs and classes, to improve, as necessary, efficiency and quality.
- Establishes, implements and enforces
program policies, procedures and safety standards for program staff
and patrons.
- Plans, organizes, directs and
supervises swimming, swim instruction, and water safety programs and special
events for disabled persons of all ages.
- Provides specialized training for
aquatics staff and volunteers in various areas including emergency procedures,
disabilities, and various types of therapy.
- Plans, organizes and directs
aquatics activities in conjunction with other agencies and organizations.
- Serves as liaison between
Therapeutics, Aquatics programs and the general public.
- Provides physical therapy programs
for individuals that conform to recommendations from medical personnel.
- Provides information and referrals
to the community regarding programs available, including developing and
distributing brochures and disseminating program information.
- Supervises all aspects of
registration.
- Creates marketing information (i.e.,
brochure information, flyers, etc.).
- Bills agencies for facility use.
- Purchases and maintains specialized
program equipment.
- Solves problems and manages
conflict.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is a single position class which
has responsibility for managing the total operation of a year-round adapted
aquatics program at an assigned swimming pool facility. This class differs from
that of Swimming Pool Manager in
that the latter is responsible for managing a City operated swimming pool
facility for the Summer Swim
Program normally attended by able-bodied persons.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Knowledges, Skills and
Abilities
- Knowledge of mental, physical, and
developmental disabilities, and the service and safety needs associated
with each.
- Knowledge of swimming techniques and
lifesaving.
- Knowledge of swimming pool hazards
and safety precautions.
- Knowledge of the principles and
practices of public recreation as they relate to swimming pool operation.
- Knowledge of the principles and
practices of supervision.
- Ability to plan, organize and direct
a recreational aquatics program for disabled persons of all ages.
- Ability to train and supervise
personnel engaged in adapted aquatics programming.
- Ability to establish and maintain
effective public relations.
- Ability to express oneself clearly
and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Competency Knowledges, Skills and
Abilities
- Knowledge of organizations and
agencies providing services to the disabled.
- Ability to prepare reports.
- Ability to coordinate and adapt a
variety of water-related activities to the disabled population.
Training and Experience
Any combination of training and
experience equivalent to successful completion of three (3) full seasons of work in swimming pool management, life guarding,
swimming instruction or related activity, including one (1) season of specialized work in a
program serving disabled persons.
Licenses/Certificates
- Possession of a current American Red
Cross Water Safety Instructor's Certificate at time of appointment.
- Possession of a current American Red
Cross Adapted Aquatics Instructor's Certificate within a reasonable
time after appointment.
- Possession of a current certificate
indicating successful completion of an approved course in first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation as
prescribed by the State Department of Health, at time of appointment.
- Possession of current American Red
Cross Life guarding Certificate.
