CLASS SUMMARY:
  Provide a variety of services in support of marketing and public relations strategies. Performs work of considerable difficulty in directing, planning, implementing and monitoring marketing and promotional services and activities. Performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
  An employee in this class provides marketing and promotion services which require in-depth knowledge of private and public sector marketing at all levels. This class is distinguished by its particular focus on promoting and marketing and providing public information services.
  An employee in this class manages marketing and public relations for the City as a whole, a large department of the City or a comparable major city program of key importance or sensitivity with complex marketing and public relation issues. This is the highest level of a three level Marketing & Public Outreach series. May be a supervisor or an individual contributor.

QUALIFICATIONS
(These qualifications are typically required. An equivalent combination of education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities sufficient to satisfactorily perform the duties of the job may be substituted.)

Education and Experience
   A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Communications, Marketing, or a closely related field and four (4) years of increasingly responsible marketing or public relations experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
  Positions at the San Jose International Airport may require additional education and experience.

Licensing Requirements
   Valid California Driver’s License may be required.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities  (position requirements at entry and depending on area of assignment)

Positions at the San Jose International Airport may also require knowledge of the air transportation and aviation industry, and knowledge of Federal, State, and local rules and regulations governing airport operations.

Develops and implements an effective public information and advertising program to educate the general public and business community on facilities, services and activities available.

Supervises daily operations of marketing staff by assigning work and assisting in project development.

Manages design, production and list of marketing collateral.

Ensures resources for projects are available and oversees marketing budget.

5.

Manages media relations, which includes writing news releases, articles, giving speeches and serving as media contact at all times, including emergencies.

Acts as liaison between the City and Federal, State, County and local governments and other governmental agencies.

Prepares and delivers presentations on marketing programs, services and activities of the City of San Jose.

8.

Develops opinion surveys and analyzes results of them; determines target audience.
