April 13, 2011—In the category of large community, San José, California, won the 2011 Siemens Sustainable Community Award for its adoption of Green Vision, a 10-point roadmap for innovation and environmental responsibility that serves to strengthen economic opportunity and prosperity. Plant Named America’s 4th Largest Onsite Green Energy User/Producer. July 27, 2009—The San José/Santa Clara Water Pollution Control Plant (Plant) landed in 4th place on a list developed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of the nation’s top 20 entities that generate and use the most green energy on site. The entities are among the 1,100 partners in the EPA’s Green Power Partnership program that voluntarily purchase green power to reduce the environmental impacts of conventional electricity use. |

City Wins Two State Recycling Awards. July 13, 2009—The California Resource Recovery Association
(CRRA) announced that the City's Environmental Services Department will be receiving two awards for its
efforts at its annual conference. The Working Toward Zero Waste Award is being given to the City's
Zero Waste Event Program and the Outstanding Closing the Loop Award is being given to the Urban
Compost Marketing program The CRRA Annual Conference recognizes programs and successes that go
above and beyond in their efforts to prevent waste. This is the first time the City of San José has received
these awards. Both awards will be presented at the CRRA Annual Conference on August 4. |

City Apartment Recycling Program Receives Excellence Award. June 23, 2009—The Solid Waste
Association of North America (SWANA) announced that the City of San José, in partnership with
Recycle Plus contractor Green Waste Recovery, was selected to receive the prestigious "2009
Recycling System Gold Excellence Award." The awards team commended the City for its
"successful efforts in achieving the highest level of excellence in solid waste management" by
diverting nearly 80% of apartment waste from local landfills, due to GreenWaste’s garbage
processing system which removes recyclables and composts the remaining organic material. |

San Jose BioCenter Awarded Title as Top Global Incubator. April 23, 2009—The San Jose BioCenter in San José, Calif., was awarded the 2009 National Business Incubation Association’s Randall M. Whaley Incubator of the Year Award and the Dinah Adkins Incubator of the Year Award in the Technology Category along with a cash prize of $2000. The Randall M. March 9, 2009—In the nation’s center of green innovation, San José’s City Hall is one of the greenest buildings in town, achieving the top certification of LEED-EB Platinum from the U.S. Green Building Council.
