Since taking office, Mayor Reed has been committed to making every San José neighborhood an even safer place to live.

Making Critical Investments to Create Safer Neighborhoods

Mayor Reed has made public safety a top priority and worked to maintain San José’s status as one of America’s safest big cities. Under his leadership, the city has made a number of strategic investments in public safety, such as:

  • The successful Safe Summer Initiative, which was started in 2008 to keep kids off the streets and engaged in positive activities during the summer.
  • $2 million in additional funding for gang prevention and intervention programs during Mayor Reed's first term. Learn about the Mayor's Gang Prevention Task Force
  • Expansion of three existing fire stations and construction of three new stations to help improve fire department coverage throughout the city.
  • Construction of the city's first police substation in South San José.

These types of investments have helped significantly reduce gang violence in San José during Mayor Reed's tenure in office. View a graph of gang violence stats in San José PDF

22 San José Firefighters Return to the Line Thanks to Federal Grant

SAFER Grant Press Conference Photo

UPDATED: 8/26/2011
Mayor Reed was joined by numerous federal, state, and local leaders came together on August 25 to celebrate the return of 22 firefighters to the line. The re-hiring of these laid-off San José firefighters was made possible by a $15 million federal Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant. This first batch of firefighters completed a six-week refresher training over the summer and are now back on active duty.

“In these trying budget times, I am extremely pleased to welcome these 22 firefighters back to our department and our community,” Mayor Reed said. “I’d like to thank the many different people who joined together to help us receive and accept this grant award.

The SAFER grant will allow the Fire Department to fill an additional 27 firefighter positions in the coming months.
