    The Housing Department is pleased to announce that the draft Apartment Rent Ordinance (ARO) and Regulations are available for public review and comment. The 30-day comment period will run from August 14, 2017 to September 15, 2017. Over the past two years, the San José community has been engaged in a discussion regarding the Apartment Rent Ordinance and its role within our community. After gathering input from the community and receiving direction from the City Council, a draft ARO is ready for public review. The draft ARO includes language regarding several important issues including: • Annual General Increase • Capital Improvements • Petitions Filed by Tenants and Landlords • Hearing Process The Housing Department is hosting three community meetings (8/24, 8/31 & 9/14) to discuss the draft ARO. Attendance is encouraged to provide feedback on the draft ARO and to understand potential changes for landlords and tenants of rent controlled apartments.

  2. Celebrate the Solar Eclipse at Happy Hollow Park & Zoo

    All of North America will be treated to an eclipse of the sun on Monday, Aug. 21, 2017. Happy Hollow Park & Zoo (HHPZ) will open at 9:00 a.m. for guests wishing to view the eclipse from within the gates and will distribute a limited supply of special viewing glasses courtesy of our partners, Happy Hollow Foundation and Rotary Club of San José, starting at 10:00 a.m. Attendees can enjoy a viewing area set up in HHPZ’s meadow, along with various family activities until 12 noon. Glasses will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Even without special viewing glasses, come see how the animal residents react to "night time in the day time"! The eclipse will begin at 9:05 a.m. and peak in San José at 10:15 a.m., when the moon obscures 74% of the sun. Happy Hollow Members receive free admission for this event and regular admission will apply to non-members.
