City of San José to Recognize
San Jose Unified School District

The San Unified School District was recently honored for its academic excellence by the national economic development trade publication Expansion Management Magazine. San Jose Unified was the only district in San Jose to be recognized and it is a national achievement.

“As centers of unique economic opportunity and vitality, San Jose and Silicon Valley will continue to require a deep pool of well-educated people to sustain our global competitiveness,” said San Jose Mayor Ron Gonzales.  “I am proud that San Jose Unified School District has received national recognition for its achievements in educating our young and preparing them for an exciting and challenging future in Silicon Valley.”

The City of San Jose will recognize San Jose Unified for this accomplishment with a proclamation at the City Council meeting, Tuesday, January 18, 2000, at 1:30 p.m.

Expansion Management Magazine does a nationwide survey of 1,500 school districts and produces what it calls an “Education Quotient,” which in turn is mailed to 45,000 CEOs, vice presidents, and corporate directors who are seeking to expand or relocate their businesses. The Quotient is now in its ninth year, and evaluates school districts in three areas: graduate outcome, including how well students learn and how many stay through graduation; resources, which measures a community’s financial commitment to education; and finally the community’s adult educational attainment and income levels.

“No single factor is more important to our readers than finding a location with a high quality work force,” said Bill King, editor. “The Education Quotient provides them with a way to compare communities nationwide in terms of the quality of workforce they are likely to encounter should they choose to open a facility there.”

“We are extremely pleased and proud to receive this national recognition from the economic development and business community. San Jose Unified is, and will continue to be, committed to providing high quality education services to the diverse community we serve,” said Superintendent Linda Murray, Ph. D.
