Airport Helps
Reduce Noise in Two San José Schools
Sound Insulation Completed at Washington Elementary School
and Sacred Heart Nativity School
San José, CA ---- As students across
the Bay Area begin school this fall, some will find their classrooms are
much quieter. The Norman Y. Mineta San José International Airport
has just completed its Acoustical Treatment Program (ACT) in Washington
Elementary School and Sacred Heart Nativity School in San José.
Washington Elementary School is located at 100 Oak Street. Sacred Heart
Nativity School is located at 325 Willow Street.
“The students, staff and community are very pleased…the
windows have reduced the airplane noise a great deal and the air conditioning
has already brought relief during hot days,” said Carlos Acosta,
Principal, Washington Elementary School.
“With the recent addition of the new windows and the interior
infrastructure improvements, the building looks new, something that will
undoubtedly make our parishioners and students proud,” commented
Father Jerónimo Gutiérriez, Pastor, Sacred Heart Church.
The Airport paid more than $2 million to complete these school projects
with new windows, air conditioning, doors, and full sound insulation.
Funds for the ACT Program come from Passenger Facility Charges (PFC) and
grants. The PFC is collected by the airlines and shown as a departure
surcharge ($4.50). The Airport is required to submit an application to
the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for use of these funds.
To date, nearly 1,400 homes have received acoustical treatment throughout
San José and Santa Clara. The ACT program is currently beginning
sound insulation on another 350 homes in the San José neighborhoods
of Market Almaden, Guadalupe Washington, Ryland Vendome, and Rosemary
Gardens.
The Airport is committed to minimizing the impact of noise and improving
the quality of life for people who live near the Airport. The Acoustical
Treatment Program (ACT) works with eligible property owners to offer sound
insulation at no cost. It is considered one of the most highly recognized
programs in the country that provides successful noise reduction.
Norman Y. Mineta San José International Airport (SJC) is owned
and operated by the City of San José, California. Serving Silicon
Valley, daily nonstop service is offered to 33 domestic and international
cities. In 2001, SJC served 13.1 million passengers. In an effort to improve
customer service, the Airport Improvement Program is underway with the
reconstruction of Runway 30 Left, an interim International Arrivals Facility,
and transportation access projects.
