Background:
The USNS San Jose is a logistics ship that provides
supplies to U.S. Navy combatant ships at sea for extended periods of
time. Ships often display a
“house flag” during the replenishment operation.
House flags are unique to each ship and often have a relationship
with the ship’s name or history. The house flag is a point of pride
for the crew and a distinguishing characteristic for the ship.
Commander Bailey will use the City of San Jose and San Jose
Sharks flag as the house flags of the USNS San Jose.
In
order to carry out the Navy's mission effectively, fleet units must be
capable of remaining at sea for prolonged periods of time, possibly in
areas of the world where friendly re-supply ports are not available, and
remain fully ready to carry out any assigned tasks. Military Sealift
Command (MSC) ships are equipped to replenish combatants underway with
fuel, ammunition, provisions, and spare parts. As a result of underway
replenishment techniques, the US Navy can remain mission ready to carry
out US policy anywhere in the world.
The USNS San Jose is involved in underway replenishment of fleet
units. Underway
replenishment (UNREP) is a broad term applied to all methods of
transferring fuel, munitions, supplies, and personnel from one ship to
another while the vessels are underway.
The
USNS San Jose is currently is Guam.
Commander Bailey will bring the flags to the USNS San Jose on
October 28.
