San Jose Companies Receive Funding
For Installing “Cool Roofs”
On
Monday, July 30, New World Machining will be the first San Jose company
to receive a reward for installing a new “cool roof.” Based on an
incentive payment of 20 cents per square foot of roof area, the check
will amount to $4,866.
Commercial
and multi-family building owners must apply for incentive payments by
Friday, August 31, and have until October 31 to install the roofs. The
incentive program is geared towards commercial and multi-family
residential structures that are approximately 10,000 square feet or
larger.
Manpower
Staffing Services and Mohawk Packaging Company will receive their checks
soon, and 11 other buildings are in the application process.
The City of San Jose’s Cool Roofs Incentive Program is being
coordinated by the
Department of Environmental
Services, using a contract from the sponsoring Pacific Gas and Electric
Company. A total of $481,000 is available.
Cool
roofs are designed to reflect the sun’s heat energy, and stay 50 to 60
degrees cooler at peak conditions. As a result, they reduce energy
demand, reduce cooling energy use by 20 to 70 percent, and reduce
building maintenance expense because these roofs tend to last much
longer.
”Just
after our Cool Roof was installed, there were several days of hot
weather and we noticed that the air conditioning was running much less
than usual,” stated Marvin Elsten, president of New World Machining.
“This has continued to be the case throughout the summer.”
“Mayor
Gonzales has directed the City to be a leader on energy issues and this
program is just one example of those efforts, “ stated Carl Mosher,
director of environmental services.
“Building owners who install Cool Roofs will help our community
reduce its energy needs, while at the same time making a smart
investment in their infrastructure.”
To
qualify for the Cool Roof retrofit program, the building must be served
by Pacific Gas and Electric Company and be installed by October 31. The
roofing project must use only non-metallic roofing materials with at
least 65 percent reflectivity from the Energy Star Roofing Products
list, and must have warranties from either the roofing contractor or
manufacturer to cover 5 years labor and 10 years of material costs in
the event of select problems. Cool Roofs are usually white in color and
are applied as coatings or singly-ply pre-fabricated sheets.
