Public Hearings for New City Council District Boundaries

San José, California Public hearings on proposed changes in Council district boundaries will be conducted on Tuesday, August 14 and August 21.  Both meetings will begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be held at San José City Hall in the City Council Chambers, located at 801 North First Street in San José.

The boundaries of these new areas will determine which City Council district represents each resident.  San José residents are encouraged to attend the hearings and comment on the proposed boundary changes.  The proposed redistricting plan minimizes boundary changes to existing City Council districts.  The following neighborhoods would be affected by the proposed plan (i.e., moved from one Council district to another):

At the close of the public hearing on August 21, the City Council will approve an ordinance establishing new boundaries for Council districts in San José.  The second reading of the ordinance is tentatively scheduled to take place the following week at the Council meeting of August 28, and the new boundaries will take effect 30 days following that date.

Every 10 years after the Census figures are released, the City establishes new boundaries for each council district, to ensure equal representation for all San José citizens.  These changes are being recommended by the Redistricting Advisory Committee, based on the 2000 U.S. Census figures and public input.

For more information about redistricting, contact the City of San José Planning Services Division at (408) 277-4576 or visit the City’s website at: www.ci.san-jose.ca.us/redistricting.
