Mineta San José International Airport
Welcomes "Heading East" Traveling Exhibit

San José, CA - Norman Y. Mineta San José International Airport (SJC) is now serving as the temporary home to "Heading East", a photographic exhibit commemorating 150 years of Asian Pacific American history in California. The exhibit, consisting of 16 pieces, is displayed at the south end of Terminal C, along the windows en route to the baggage claim carousels. Heading East is scheduled for a 3-month stay at SJC. This exhibit was made possible through the California Asian Pacific American Experience - Silicon Valley, a non-profit group formed by Co-Chairmen Congressman Mike Honda (D - San Jose), and Asian Week columnist Gerrye Wong, to promote education of the contributions of Asian Americans to California's history.

The approach of the exhibit is to expound upon the cherished values of democracy, freedom, and economic opportunity as seen through the eyes of Asian Pacific communities. The fundamental ideas suggested by each theme are evoked by discovering the words for these ideas from three sacred documents governing California: the Declaration of Independence, the U. S. Constitution, and the California Constitution. Thus Asian Pacific people are placed in the context of and in relationship to the shaping of California's 150 years of statehood.

Since the exhibit's creation four years ago, Congressman Honda and Wong have worked with numerous organizations throughout northern California to place "Heading East" in well-traveled, highly visible venues to help educate the public about the rich history and culture of Asian Pacific Americans in California.

The Norman Y. Mineta San José International Airport is owned and operated by the City of San José, and last year served 13.1 million passengers. It is hoped that the many travelers passing through San Jose will enjoy this rich cultural visual exhibit.
