San
José Public Library Director Recognized for Vision and Leadership in
Innovation San
José, CA – San José City Librarian Jane Light is the recipient of this
year’s Client Achievement Award, awarded annually by the American
Institute of Architects, California Council. This distinction recognizes
her singular contribution to the visioning, planning and implementation
of the new Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library project; a unique
collaboration between the City of San José and San José State
University. Pamela
Anderson-Brulé, President of Anderson-Brulé Architects—the local
associate architect for the project—declares that first and foremost,
Light believes “in a process where the architect and the client work
hand in hand with each other, are both members of the same team and have
responsibilities and things they’ve got to get done in order to
succeed.” “Foresight,”
“collaboration,” “inclusion”—all words used to describe
Light’s approach to managing capital projects. She is applauded for
being a visionary, with a personal risk-taking style that allows others
to lead. Those qualities were essential with such a unique project
encompassing multiple stakeholders. Committees and teams were formed to
guide the design and operational goals with public input solicited along
the Again,
speaking of Light, Anderson-Brulé says, “She’s my idol when it
comes to the way she deals with people and the way she leads
organizations; she’s very interpersonal. I have worked for 15 years
for clients and she stands out as the best one we have ever had.” About
the joint library project Scheduled
to open in 2003, the new Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library will be
funded and operated jointly by San José State University and the City
of San José. As the first such collaboration between a major U.S. city
and a university, the project will change long-standing models of
library design and the delivery of information services to users. The
joint library will be the new home of San José’s main public library
and the university library. When completed, the structure will rise
eight stories high, with a lower level and mezzanine and 475,000 square
feet of useable space. The $177.5 million facility will greatly expand
the inadequate seating and collections space now available in the two
partner libraries and allow for state-of-the-art information technology.
Library
users will have access to the combined collections of two outstanding
libraries, including approximately one million volumes and 4,000 journal
titles. An expanded array of information services is planned for the high
tech, high touch reference area, which will serve the public and the
university community. A technology showcase area will provide hands-on
demonstrations of new high tech information products from Silicon Valley
firms. ####
