Subject: CAMDEN COMMUNITY CENTER PROJECT
COUNCIL DISTRICT: 9
SNI AREA: NA
Approval of the first amendment to the agreement with the Steinberg Group for architectural consultant services for the Camden Community Center Project, increasing the compensation by $168,000, from $50,000 to $218,000, and extending the term of the agreement from December 31, 2001 to August 31, 2002.
BACKGROUND
In November 2000, Bond Measure P was approved by voters to provide funds for the improvement of parks and recreation facilities in San José. Camden Community Center, which is designated to become the focal point of Council District 9, is receiving a portion of the funds for renovation and expansion. The current master plan must be amended to incorporate all the changes necessary for the Camden Community Center to become a multi-service community center.
Approximately $9.1 million is programmed for the renovation and expansion of Camden Community Center to accommodate the activities and services desired by the community. A community meeting was held on May 2, 2001 to collect information regarding the type of indoor and outdoor programs that residents would like to have at this Camden facility.
The Steinberg Group, architects, was selected from a list of pre-qualified architectural consultants to provide design services for the project. In June 2001, the City Manager approved the agreement with the Steinberg Group to perform programming services for this project.
Subsequent community meetings were held on August 9, 2001 and September 13, 2001 to further define the scope of the project. The Steinberg Group has substantially completed the programming for the project as stipulated in the current agreement. The proposed amendment to the agreement will add the balance of services needed to complete the amendment of the master plan for Camden Community Center, including conceptual site plan, draft master plan amendment, and the final master plan amendment. Staff has negotiated a fee of $168,000 for the additional services.
The master plan stage will be completed by January 2002. Immediately after the completion of the master plan for Camden Community Center, staff anticipates that the Steinberg Group will be engaged to begin the next stage of work to complete the final design of the Center. The project is scheduled to bid in October 2002 and award in November 2002.
