Subject: REQUEST FOR COMMENDATION 2002 EMPLOYEE FOOD DRIVE

Since 1997, the employees of the City of San Jose have participated in the Annual Holiday 2^nd Harvest Food Drive donating over 27,664 pounds of food and $7,200 through 2001.

This year, employees were given a number of different ways to “donate” - they could bring food and deposit it into the 2^nd Harvest bins that were located at a number of facilities throughout the City, or could go directly to 2^nd Harvest and donate online (www.2ndharvest.net). They could also connect with the Phoenix Data Center (www.phoenixdatacenter.org) click on the “San Jose Giving Connection” ribbon, and locate a non-profit of their choice to donate their funds or gift certificates to, or they could volunteer their time directly at any agency listed through the Volunteer Center (.www.volunteerexchange.org). And, again, City employees came through!

During the 2002 Drive, employees and, in some cases, residents donated 10,803 pounds of food, and $6,056 in cash, which when used by 2^nd Harvest to purchase food, brought the final total to over 26,000 pounds of food!
