TO:

HONORABLE MAYOR

AND CITY COUNCIL

FROM:

Patricia L. O’Hearn

City Clerk

SUBJECT:

Naming of City-Owned Facilities

CALIFORNIA THEATRE

DATE:

May 29, 2003

RECOMMENDATION

The City Council consider the recommendation of the Historic Landmarks Commission to re-name the Fox Theatre at 345 South First Street to its original name, California Theatre.

BACKGROUND

Pursuant to Council Policy 7-5 the City Clerk receives nominations for naming of public facilities which are forwarded to the appropriate Commission(s) for review and recommendation.  The process calls for the Commission(s) to hold a public hearing on  nominations prior to forwarding a recommendation to the City Council.

ANALYSIS

In April, 2003, a Nomination was received from Bob Ruff, Program Manager, Redevelopment Agency, to name the historic theatre located at 345 South First Street the California Theatre, it’s original name.  Attached to the Nomination was a memorandum of explanation, a depiction of the façade design and pictures of the original theatre marquee. All of those documents are attached to this memorandum.  The Nomination and attachments were forwarded to the Historic Landmarks Commission with a request that a Public Hearing be held on the suggested name.

In a letter dated May 21, 2003, Stephen M. Haase, Secretary, Historic Landmarks Commission, advised the City Clerk of the Commission’s Public Hearing which was  held on May 7, 2003,  and of the Commission’s vote to recommend to the City Council the theater be named California Theatre.

PUBLIC OUTREACH

The Historic Landmarks Commission held a Public Hearing on May 7, 2003.

COORDINATION
