SUBJECT: SAN JOSÉ PUBLIC LIBRARY FOUNDATION DONATION
Council adoption of a resolution accepting an in-kind donation of Cisco Systems network equipment with a stated value of $317,642 from the San José Public Library Foundation to the San Jose Public Library. A list of the specific equipment is attached.
BACKGROUND
Staff from the Library Department’s Information Technology Unit met several times with Cisco Systems representatives to discuss a variety of network issues, evaluate the Library’s current network situation, and explore solutions. This equipment donation to the San Jose Public Library Foundation is the result of these meetings.
The Library Department has outgrown its computer network that was installed in 1998 and is in need of updated network equipment. The new equipment being donated by Cisco Systems will increase the speed of Internet activities, enable easier incorporation of new and changing technologies, maximize the network’s reliability, allow additional computers to be added to the network and make it possible for the Department to conduct proactive network maintenance. These enhancements will improve the technology services the Library Department provides to San Jose residents.
