Subject: REPORT ON BIDS FOR TRAFFIC SIGNAL CONTROL EQUIPMENT
Report on bids and award the purchase of traffic signal control equipment to the low bidder, Advanced Traffic Products, Inc., at a total cost of $98,220,60 including tax, and authorize the Director of General Services to execute the purchase order.
BACKGROUND
The Department of Transportation has requested the purchase of additional traffic signal control equipment consisting of 49 each one-channel one-direction detectors, 11 each two-channel two-direction detectors, 34 phase selector card modules (encoded signal frequency recognition device) and 10,000 feet of cable. The detectors are mounted on or near traffic signal mast arms and the phase selector card modules are installed inside traffic control cabinets located curbside at street intersections. When Police and Fire vehicles are responding to an emergency, a transmitter inside the vehicle can be used to change the light at the intersection they are approaching from red to green. This enables them to pass safely through the intersection and continue on to their emergency response location. This system is currently used only on major streets such as San Carlos Street.
