Please, no more than a day before and never on Saturday.

Yard waste should be placed in the street for collection no more than 24 hours before your collection day. If you set yard waste out early, you may receive a $25 fine from the City’s Code Enforcement Division. A second early set-out results in a $50 fine; a third citation means a $75 fine.

What's so important about 24 hours?

The program is designed to limit the time yard trimmings are left on the street. They should not be put out on the street more than 24 hours before the scheduled collection.

Here's why:

  • Your neighbors appreciate it, and your neighborhood benefits when streets and storm drains are free of debris.
  • It is easier for cyclists, pedestrians, and drivers to travel when yard trimmings are not present.
  • Trimmings set out too soon may block parking, passenger pick-up & drop-off, and other curbside activities.

Unlimited yard trimmings pick-up is a benefit to the entire San Jose community. We believe the use of citations is a fair and appropriate method of making sure everyone follows the rules.

Remember – never on Saturday.
