30 Years of Vietnamese-American Achievement in America - April 19, 2005

 

On April 19, 2005, Nancy invited members of the Vietnamese American community to City Hall to accept a commendation for 30 years of achivement in America. Read the commendation
 
   
   
   
On April 19, Nancy along with Vice Mayor Cindy Chavez met with Duc Ngo, Ngai Nguyen, Han Nguyen, Suu Truong, and San Le to celebrate the 30 years of Vietnamese-Americans Achievement in America.  


WHEREAS: Following America’s war in Vietnam thirty years ago, refugees and immigrants from Vietnam came to the United States and settled as free Vietnamese-Americans who are honored and remembered for their sacrifices for freedom and human rights and for their ongoing contributions to our democratic society; and

WHEREAS: Since 1975 San José has become home to one of the largest Vietnamese-American populations in the United States, and the local Vietnamese-American community has become a significant factor in the rich cultural diversity enjoyed by the residents of our entire community; and

WHEREAS: The former flag of Vietnam, comprising three horizontal stripes of red upon a field of gold, represents the long history and culture of Vietnam, and many Vietnamese-Americans continue to remember and honor this flag as a symbol of free Vietnamese people and their struggle; and

WHEREAS: We commemorate three decades of Vietnamese-American achievement in America and in San José, and we celebrate their contributions that strengthen our community and their commitment to the principles of democracy, justice, and tolerance by which our nation was founded;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ron Gonzales, Mayor of San José, together with Vice Mayor Cindy Chavez, Councilmembers Nancy Pyle and Chuck Reed and along with our colleagues on the City Council, on this 19th day of April 2005, do hereby commend the Vietnamese-American community for its

30 YEARS OF ACHIEVEMENT IN AMERICA

and in San José, and further the City of San José acknowledges that the former flag of Vietnam is a symbol of free Vietnamese people for many of our residents.
