Councilmember Chu calls on Rush Limbaugh to apologize for racist remarks that have offended the Chinese American community
(San Jose, CA) – Today, San Jose Councilmember Kansen Chu sent a letter to radio personality Rush Limbaugh calling on him to apologize to the Chinese community for his racist remarks that mocked the Chinese language. “I find such comments to be unnecessary, immature, and unacceptable in any circumstance," said Councilmember Chu. "Not only was Mr. Limbaugh's unintelligible mockery of the Chinese language damaging to the United States but also demoralizing and degrading to the Chinese American community."
In part, the letter states:
In San Jose, a city of nearly 1 million residents in the heart of Silicon Valley, Chinese Americans are hard working people across all social and economic levels. Chinese Americans have made many large strides and contributions to our nation. Your actions and unwillingness to apologize for your comments is counterproductive and destructive to the values on which this diverse country is built on. The United States is a land of immigrants where all are embraced and accepted for their cultural heritage. We, as Americans, have a civic duty to respect the diverse ethnicities that make up our great nation.
“I'm respectfully asking Mr. Limbaugh to retract and issue an apology for these highly insensitive comments that have offended the Chinese people and the millions of Chinese Americans across this nation," said Chu. “I hope he will do the right thing and I look forward to hearing his response.”
