Councilmember Chu and Williams Join Flea Market Vendors to Promote Cultural Landmark
(San José, CA) – Today, Councilmember Kansen Chu will be joined by Councilmember Forrest Williams, and local vendors at the San José Flea Market to highlight that the market is still open for business. Despite plans for redevelopment of the 120-acre site, the flea market continues as a vibrant local market and active shopping destination.
“The flea market is still open for business,” said Chu. “It will be here for another two and a half years so I encourage all members of the community to come and shop here.”
Councilmember Chu has been working with City staff and flea market vendors regarding the proposed development of the San José Flea Market site. Chu’s effort in promoting the San José Flea Market as a cultural landmark complements the public relations campaigns by the Flea Market through print advertisements and television commercials. The joint work done by both parties clarifies the misconception that the Flea Market is closing.
Rich Alvari, sales and marketing representative of the San José Flea Market, said the media’s portrayal of the market closing is misleading and small family businesses have been affected.
“Attendance has dropped.” Alex Richani, spokesperson for the San José Flea Market Merchants Association, adds, “We hope that our publicity efforts will help bring back our customers.”
Since 1960, the San José Flea Market has served the City of San José as a major regional commercial destination, providing shopping and entertainment, as well as acting as a popular community gathering place. The flea market spans over the 8 miles of alleys and corridors and supports over 2,000 vendors.
