HAVE YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO VOLUNTEER?
Have you always wanted to make a positive difference in the community but haven't really had the time or opportunity? Here's your chance, Alum Rock Counseling Center is looking for caring individuals like yourself to become "Mentors” to at risk youth in East Side San Jose – AND all it takes is 8 short hours a month!
Currently we are working with Ocala Middle School in East Side San Jose to identify “at risk” youth to be matched up with mentors. The student's are identified by the principal as being "at risk for not graduating"; this can be for truancy, grades, challenges at home, etc. The students and parents are then asked if they would like to participate in our program. If both are interested we enroll the student's in our Mentor program which also consists of student’s attending weekly life skills class held at Ocala with an ARCC counselor. We then match up a Mentor with a Mentee to provide support, friendship, encouragement, educational/career assistance and inspiration. All while receiving Service Learning Hours!
The goals of ARCC Mentor Program are to
1) See visible improvements on academic achievements through attendance, reading/writing and graduation
2) Build on communication skills specifically around communication with adults and peer to peer
3) Develop healthy relationship with consistency and accountability
4) Expose students to new environments and resources
As part of our program we also sponsor field trips and encourage Community Service. We have taken students and Mentors to SF cruises, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Santa Cruz, The Tech Museum, San Francisco Giants, Oakland Raiders, Ice skating, Ragging Waters, etc. We also volunteer at Sacred Heart Community Center and Toys 4 Tots.
