I. San Jose Prepared! Classes

Module 1
Home Preparedness and Neighborhood Organization
Discusses the impact of disasters on our homes and community.

Describes steps that can be taken to avert or minimize damage in our homes and neighborhood from disasters.

Introduces the role of San Jose Prepared! participants in disaster response; as well as team organization, decision-making and other knowledge and skills that are part of an effective C.E.R.T. neighborhood group. Class Fee: $10

Module 2
Fire Suppression and Household Hazardous Materials
Explains the basic concepts of fire chemistry, the dangers of fire and how to identify and reduce potential fire hazards.

Describes what to do when confronted with fire, including hands-on instruction in basic firefighting and suppression techniques.

Discusses how to identify where hazardous materials might exists in your community. Describes ways to minimize hazardous materials in your home. Class Fee: $10

Module 3
Disaster Medicine and Psychology

Introduces the principles of medical triage and treatment strategies for life-threatening conditions.

Explains how to perform a "head-to-toe" patient assessment, as well as establishing a suitable treatment area.

Addresses public health concerns such as hygiene and sanitation within the treatment area.

Discusses emotional and psychological post-disaster issues and techniques for stress management. Class Fee: $10

Module 4
Light Search and Rescue
Describes the basic concepts used in search and rescue.

Discusses issues such as setting search and rescue priorities and situation "size-up", rescuer safety and damage assessment.

Participants receive hands-on instruction in basic techniques such as victim search triangulation, debris cribbing and lifting and victim removal.
Class Fee: $10

Module 5
Terrorism Awareness
Introduces the subject of Terrorism and provides an overview of some of the methods used by terrorists.

Describes the history and foundation of Emergency Preparedness.

Primary focus is on helping you develop an awareness of the possibility of future terrorist attacks in the United States and provides information that you can use to enhance your chances of survival. There is no charge for this class.

II. San Jose Prepared! Exercises

San Jose Prepared! Exercise - Decentralized exercise giving all participants an opportunity to employ San Jose Prepared! principles following a simulated earthquake within their own neighborhoods. We will make groups from those people who would like to participate but are not in an organized neighborhood. Debriefing  immediately follows the exercise at a central location. 
Fee: There is no charge for this event.

Pre-Exercise Training Session - Prepares you with materials and directions to participate in the San Jose Prepared! exercise held in the neighborhoods each April.
Fee: There is no charge for this event.

III. CPR and AED*

CPR - Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is a basic life-saving technique that can be performed when someone is unconscious and not breathing. Hands-on instruction is taught by the San Jose Firefighters and certified by the American Heart Association. Graduates are certified for two (2) years. Class Fee: $17 (cash or check)

Basic First Aid - This course of instruction teaches basic life saving skills for adults such as treatment for burns, wounds and bleeding, how to immobilize broken bones, and a brief overview of the Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) device. Class Fee: $17 (cash or check)

Payment is due prior to class

*Both classes are held on the second Saturday of each month. All class sessions start promptly at 8:00 a.m. and end at 4:00 p.m. It is imperative that you arrive on time.  The CPR class is taught in the morning, followed by a break for lunch, and then the First Aid class commences. Your can take both or either class that day.
