POLICE DATA SPECIALIST I (PT) (1182)
CLASS PURPOSE
Under close supervision, learns to perform specialized technical work
utilizing automated law enforcement systems, including complex data input and
retrieval processes requiring extreme accuracy. Performs related work as
required
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one position may not include all the
duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)
- Operate computer terminals, accessing all local, state, and national
automated systems for law enforcement and criminal justice information to
process, input, and control the quality of all offense, incident, and
accident reports into RIS (Records Information System). Verify and process
all felony and misdemeanor warrants; input warrants into PIN (Police
Information Network), DOJ (Department of Justice), and/or NCIC (National
Crime Information Center) Wanted Persons System. Verify accuracy and proper
identification of offenders through WPS (Wanted Persons System), CJIC
(Criminal Justice Information Control), and DMV (Department of Motor
Vehicles). Process release of defendants on own recognizance; set court
dates; accept bail. Notify officers of prisoners held by other cities and
ensure prisoners are picked up within prescribed time limits.
- Accept and confirm restraining orders for law enforcement purposes.
Perform quality control and process criminal and traffic citations.
- Roll identifiable fingerprints; process fingerprint cards and forward to
DOJ and FBI, as appropriate; comply with sex, narcotics and arson offenders
registration requirements; input criminal citations and control the quality
of criminal histories; update arrest disposition in CJIC. Research and
process requests for sealings of adult criminal arrests. Process informal
booking of suspects cited for criminal offenses or arrested on outstanding
warrants. Finger print public applicants and collect fees.
- Input stolen, recovered, impounded and towed vehicles associated with
misdemeanor, felony crimes, and/or missing persons into NCIC and DOJ
systems; send county-wide APBs (All Points Bulletins) on stolen vehicles;
notify owners of police-towed vehicles and confirm identification of owners
for release; check for warrants and current registration; collect imposed
fees.
- Input, research, and retrieve data for case enrichment of crime reports
and develop and identify suspects for investigative officer follow-up.
Access ACES (Automated Case Enrichment System), CAPSS (Computer Assisted
Public Safety System), and other automated systems for suspect
identification. Input all gun data into AFS; Input field interrogation
information into ACES.
- Determine authorized recipients, release information as appropriate, and
collect fees. Send and retrieve telecommunications; input stolen property
and pawn data into APS (Automated Property System). Input missing persons
data into the NCIC Missing and Unidentified Persons System. Process computer
generated printouts of marijuana purge and gun validation lists. Research
and seal court-ordered juvenile criminal detentions. Maintain current
state-wide criminal history log. Compile Drunk in Public complaint list and
forward to Court. Research and compile data for subpoena compliance.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Incumbents of this class are assigned to the Operations Support Services Unit
for a minimum six-month probationary period followed by six months of on-the-job
performance. Incumbents learn to accurately process varied police data and
identification information, utilizing a full range of specialized, automated,
and manual information systems. The focus of this class is on learning to use
computer systems and perform technical functions to support police officers.
This class differs from Police Data Specialist II in that the incumbents of the
latter class perform at a journey level and participate in training employees in
this class
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Knowledge,, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of English, spelling, grammar, and punctuation and of office
practices and procedures.
- Ability to learn to perform specialized police data and identification
work.
- Ability to learn to use a variety of automated information systems.
- Ability to read and understand information in manuals and regulations
pertaining to the criminal justice system.
- Ability to type at a net rate of 45 words per minute.
Competency Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to follow Police Department policies and procedures accurately,
and apply procedures to the solution of problem situations.
- Ability to input and retrieve information accurately and quickly using a
variety of automated criminal justice information systems.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with others.
- Ability to successfully complete a six-month training program administered
by Operations Support Services Division.
Education
High school completion or GED certificate.
