SENIOR CRIME DATA SPECIALIST (1186)
CLASS PURPOSE
Under general supervision, is responsible for training and supervision of
assigned staff. Supervises and performs specialized technical
support work
utilizing automated law enforcement systems and software to provide crime
data for police officers and management to use in the identification
and
apprehension of criminal offenders, the deployment
of officers and the
improvement of public safety. Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one position may not include all the
duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)
- Assign, schedule, train and evaluate assigned staff and their work.
- Select input data and appropriate software for retrieval of data; compile
and analyze statistical crime data using
software to produce a variety of reports;
monitor crimes and identify trends of criminal activity and flag hot spots.
- Design and revise forms; prepare maps, charts, graphs,
scattergrams, matrices.
- Develop and maintain large computerized data bases; develop and maintain
data dictionaries; maintain special files by
precoding and performing audits.
- Create macros, program routines and edit programs used in searching,
retrieving and formatting data; interpret
flow charts; interpret and correct error
conditions.
- Furnish support data for various programs such as crime prevention,
truancy abatement, grant programs.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Incumbents of this class are responsible for the supervision and training
of Crime Data Specialists in the preparation of reports and
materials to
police officers and management. This class differs from the Crime Data
Specialist in that the latter class has no supervisory functions. The focus
of this class differs from the Police Records Clerk series in that the latter
do not do any programming.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum
Knowledges, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of principles and practices of supervision.
- Knowledge of Police Department procedures, policies and codes.
- Knowledge of a variety of automated law enforcement systems and software.
- Knowledge of basic statistical methods.
- Ability to present clear and concise reports verbally and in writing.
- Ability to understand, interpret and apply instructions, rules and
regulations.
- Ability to think logically and follow detailed instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with others.
Competency Knowledges, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of the information needs and objectives of police officers and
other users of statistical crime data.
- Knowledge of available software used to compile, analyze data and prepare
reports.
- Ability to resolve difficult operating problems in using varied computer
information systems and software.
- Ability to schedule, assign, train and evaluate assigned staff and their
work.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with others.
Training and Experience
Any combination of training and experience equivalent to completion of
high school and two (2) years of experience, utilizing software and
multiple
automated police information systems, comparable in nature and scope to
that
of a Crime Data Specialist with the City of San Jose.
