ACCOUNTING TECHNICIAN (PT) (1227)
CLASS PURPOSE
Under general supervision, performs complex work of considerable difficulty in the maintenance of financial records, systems or transactions. Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)
- Provides detailed technical para professional accounting records to operating departments or Finance Department, including but not limited to: summaries, inventories, control reports, projections or analyses.
- Processes financial documents according to internal regulations, and in compliance with county, state or federal requirements; reviews records or other documents to resolve problems and/or determine proper entries and documentation.
- May supervise accounting clerical personnel, assign, and evaluate work.
- Provides technical assistance to auditors or accountants.
- Advises operating departments/units in setting up and conducting financial matters and departmental program budgets according to City regulations.
- Maintains orginal documents of a financial and legal nature regarding property and federally funded loans. Is responsible for loan collections and payoffs.
- Operates or utilizes a variety of office and accounting machines and equipment; uses a computer terminal.
- Interfaces with other City departments, auditors, business entities, governmental jurisdiction and general public, giving and receiving information regarding area of financial responsibility.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the highest class in the accounting clerical series and differs from the next lower class of Principal Account Clerk, in complexity and technical difficulty of duties: This class differs from Accountants in that incumbents of the latter may sign off reports, statements and audits and perform other professional functions.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Knowledges, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of accounting clerical principles and procedures as practiced by the City of San Jose, general arithmetic and accounting clerical work.
- Knowledge of office principles and practices, supervision and training methods.
- Ability to coordinate complex accounting clerical tasks according to City accounting practices.
- Ability to function independently.
- Ability to meet assigned deadlines.
- Ability to work accurately and to comply with City practices and procedures.
Competency Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of assigned functional area of work, allowing resolution of most problems without supervision.
- Ability to relate to a wide variety of individuals and maintain harmonious and productive working relationships.
Training and Experience
Any combination of training and experience equivalent to completion of high school, including two (2) courses in bookkeeping, and at least four (4) years performing responsible accounting clerical work at least two of which have been comparable to the level of Senior Account Clerk with the City of San Jose.
Licenses/Certificates
Possession of a valid California driver's license may be required.
