ENTERPRISE NETWORK TECHNICIAN II (PT) (1399)
CLASS PURPOSE
Under general supervision in the Information Technology
Department, is responsible for work of moderate difficulty in configuring,
installing, operating and maintaining the City’s large local area and wide
area network and coordinating the provision of a variety of Citywide information
systems data that may include the evaluation, planning, design and
implementation of existing and new systems for multi-use, each having specific
individual or competing requirements or integrated functions. Performs related
administrative work as required.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS
(Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples
cover all the duties which may be performed.)
- Coordinate,
configure, install and maintain large Citywide local area and wide area
network.
- Confer with
automated systems providers and consultants concerning meeting management
information needs through the development and modification of new and
existing systems.
- Recommend
preparation of systems requirements and prepare and maintain procedures
manuals, and training.
- Evaluate
and monitor cost of acquisition of computer-related items to obtain the best
results and to meet budget.
- Analyze
procedures and recommend systems applications and hardware use.
- Coordinate
the purchase of hardware and software and ensure systems compatibility.
- Operate
local area and wide area networks and monitor systems capacity input and
output for errors and other problems.
- Provide
liaison between the department users, the Information Technology Department
staff, and/or other information system providers in correcting errors and
resolving problems.
- Supervise,
train and evaluate support staff and the work of the unit.
- Maintain
and manage the internet link to the City network.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the second level in the Enterprise Network
Technician series and is responsible for the coordinating, configuring,
installing and maintaining the City’s large local area and wide networks. The
incumbent is a generalist, but is expected to be aware of and utilize expert
technical resources such as those provided by the Information Technology
department, vendors, and other similar sources.
This class differs from the Automated Systems Coordinator
in that the latter performs work of considerable difficulty in the development,
operation, maintenance and coordination of a complex, integrated system in a
department requiring a broad general knowledge of and skills in a full range of
complex technical automated systems. This class differs from the Programmer
Analyst series in that the latter performs computer programming and program
maintenance duties. This class differs from the Senior Network Engineer in that
incumbents of the latter perform work requiring a higher level of skill,
responsibility and expertise, on the large Citywide network.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge
of current trends and techniques of office automation and LAN and WAN
technologies.
- Knowledge
of the general principles of management and analytical methods for studying
problems, developing alternatives and recommendations.
- Knowledge
of the general principles, methods and techniques of systems analysis and
management as applied to automated or manual information systems and systems
analysis project control techniques.
- Knowledge
of the principles and techniques of records management.
- Ability to
communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to
establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Competency Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge
of theory and implementation practices of departmental local area and wide
area networks.
- Knowledge
of data communication principles.
- Knowledge
of information systems providers/vendors and their products.
- Knowledge
of the internet and internet routing.
- Knowledge
of SNMP and its application to large networks.
- Knowledge
of TCP/IP and its implementation.
- Knowledge
of routers and switches.
- Knowledge
of network management principles and practices.
- Knowledge
of the principles and practices of training and supervision.
- Ability to
configure and install large local area and wide area network.
- Ability to
manage and support the City’s large local area and wide area network on an
ongoing basis.
- Ability to
evaluate departmental information systems needs and communicate user needs
to consultants, providers and/or vendors.
- Ability to
assist department representatives on the City network in technical and
procedural activities.
- Ability to
perform troubleshooting and simple repairs.
Education
A Baccalaureate Degree from an accredited college or
university in Business Administration, Public Administration, Computer
Technology, or a closely related field.
Experience
Two years of experience in management analysis, which
includes enterprise/corporate operating systems analysis and development within
the typical information user’s scope of operations, including Web Page
development.
Licenses/Certificates
Possession of a Certified Network Administrator (CNA)
certificate or similar equivalencies for networks other than Novell NetWare.
Acceptable Substitutions
Additional years of directly related work experience may
be substituted for up to a maximum of two years of the educational requirement
on a year-for-year basis. There will be no substitutes for the required
experience or certificates.
