MECHANICAL PARTS WORKER (1532)
CLASS PURPOSE
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)
Orders, receives, inspects, stores, and issues automotive and maintenance vehicle parts and supplies needed for repairs and major overhauls of gas and diesel powered automotive vehicles, maintenance vehicles, construction equipment and fire equipment.
Obtains foreign and domestic automotive and maintenance vehicle parts and supplies from a variety of vendors and suppliers through established procurement procedures.
Determines parts and supply requirements from general item descriptions, catalogs, manuals, blueprints, charts, and specifications.
Issues substitute parts on the basis of knowledge of interchangeability of parts.
Contacts Purchasing Department and outside vendors for parts and supplies.
Maintains adequate inventories for operational needs.
Completes stores requisitions, work orders and other routine forms used by mechanical parts storerooms.
Operates motor vehicles in picking up parts.
May lead and supervise the work of others.
May perform shift work.

QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of storekeeping methods.
Knowledge of inventory record keeping procedures.
Knowledge of routine ordering procedures.
Knowledge of automotive terminology.
Knowledge of sources of supplies, parts, and equipment used by the City in automotive and other equipment repair used by the City of San Jose.
Knowledge of normal wear processes of automotive, equipment.
Knowledge of the standard repair procedures used for automotive, equipment.
Knowledge of the parts, supplies, and equipment used in automotive, equipment.
Ability to read and interpret catalogs, manuals, blueprints, charts, and specifications.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
Ability to lift and carry heavy and bulky supplies and equipment.
Competency Knowledges, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of computerized inventories.
Knowledge of City procurement procedures.
Knowledge of sources of supplies, parts and equipment used by the City in automotive and other equipment repair.
Knowledge of normal work process of construction and fire equipment.
Knowledge of parts, supplies and equipment used in construction and fire equipment.
Ability to supervise the work of others.
Ability to identify and procure material required for fabricating modifications to equipment.
Ability to find, develop and maintain current list of automotive vendors and suppliers.
Ability to procure replacement parts on the basis of knowledge of interchangeability of parts.
Ability to input into a computer terminal.
