SCHOOL CROSSING GUARD (PART TIME) (2441)

CLASS PURPOSE

Under immediate supervision, performs work of routine difficulty assisting children safely across streets and reporting problems requiring possible police action. Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)

Controls school crossings, street traffic, and the conduct of school children and selects safe crossing times.
Reports on violations of motorists and conduct of school children.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This class is the lower of two classes in the School Safety Series. It differs from the higher class of School Safety Coordinator in that incumbents of the latter supervise School Crossing Guards.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Knowledges, Skills and Abilities

Ability to recognize traffic hazards.
Ability to make decisions for the control of traffic and for the safe conduct of school children.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school children, parents, school personnel and the general public.

Competency Knowledges, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of traffic control techniques and procedures.
Knowledge of the traffic laws of the State of California and the City of San Jose.

Training and Experience

Any combination of training and experience equivalent to completion of eighth grade.

Licenses/Certificates

Possession of a valid driver's license authorizing operation of motor vehicle in California.

As a condition of employment, incumbents may be required to use their personal vehicles in performing the job duties.
