METAL FABRICATION MECHANIC (3172)
CLASS PURPOSE
Under general supervision, performs journey-level metalwork of moderate difficulty in the design, fabrication, repair and installation of metal parts, equipment and structural members. Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS
(Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)
- Fabricate and repair metal parts and equipment for City vehicles, apparatus, structures and facilities.
- May build prototype parts and components.
- Fabricate and repair metal signs and equipment for city traffic signs, traffic signals, traffic control apparatus, and structures.
- Answer emergency road calls to make field repairs to City equipment and structures.
- Make modifications and repairs on equipment; make job inspections, estimate costs, and determine materials requirements.
- Repair vandalized, broken, and worn metal equipment.
- Weld, braze, rivet, fasten and cut ferrous and non-ferrous materials.
- Make field repairs of public facilities and to stationary equipment.
- Repair street lights, signs and signal light poles, mast arms, foundations, controller boxes and foundations.
- Act as lead worker and train other employees.
- Perform minor mechanical repairs on City vehicle and equipment associated with welding and fabrication work.
- Use electric arc, TIG, MIG and oxy-acetylene welding equipment, cutting torches and shaping tools.
- Weld, and repair parts on all types of equipment and vehicles.
- Use and operate drill presses, sheet metal brakes, shears, punches, cranes, forklifts, come-a-longs, jacks, presses, power tubing benders, and other similar tools and equipment.
- Trains Apprentice Mechanics and Mechanics in the current welding fabrication practices used to repair automobiles, trucks, street sweepers, wheel and track tractors, air compressors, loaders, fire fighting apparatus, high pressure fire pumps, and other special equipment.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This class differs from that of Equipment Maintenance Machinist in that the latter perform precision,
journey-level machining on lathes, mills etc. while incumbents of the former occasionally use machining equipment to the extent of their skill level. It differs from equipment Maintenance Supervisor in that the latter class supervises the former.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Knowledges, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of gas, electric arc, MIG, TIG, and various types of welding and cutting apparatus.
- Knowledge of machining processes, structural fabrication, pipe fitting, and all forms of sheetmetal fabrication.
- Knowledge of safety precautions to be taken in metal working.
- Ability to perform at a competent journey-level in these crafts: welding, blacksmithing, structural fabrication, pipe fitting, and sheetmetal fabrication.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to read blueprints and work from sketches.
- Ability to design components, prototype parts and equipment.
Competency Knowledges, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of training and supervision principles and techniques
- Knowledge of estimating process for material costs.
- Ability to estimate material cost and labor.
- Ability to obtain a City driving permit.
Training and Experience
Training and education equivalent to completion of high school, and two (2) years journey-level experience in one of the metal trades or completion of a recognized apprenticeship program in one of the metal trades.
Licenses/Certificates
Possession of a valid California Driver's License at all times is a condition of employment.
