AIRPORT OPERATIONS SUPERINTENDENT (3525)

CLASS PURPOSE
   Under direction, performs work of considerable difficulty interpreting policies, methods, and procedures to ensure the effective management and direction of the Division's operations. Particular emphasis is placed on San Jose International Airport airside operations including: air carrier, air cargo, and general aviation operations, airport certification, emergency planning, access control, communications, and communications technical support. Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (The position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)

Typical End Results Include: Providing a safe environment for the conduct of air transportation and the operation of aircraft for business or pleasure; efficient use of airside and landside facilities; ensuring uninterrupted FAA certification compliance of the airport by conducting timely inspections and efficient correction of discrepancies on a daily, monthly and quarterly basis; assuring the safety status of the airport as a participant of the National Transportation System.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
   The position reports directly to the Airport Operations Manager. In the absence of the Operations Manager, this class is assigned airside section functions and related duties. As the principal participants with the Operations Manager, this class shares a major responsibility for interpreting, enforcing policies, methods, and procedures to ensure effective management of the day-to-day operations of the airport.
   This class differs from the lower class of Airport Operations Supervisor in that an incumbent of the latter class has a narrower span of control for operations area of the airport and receives supervision from the Airport Operations Superintendent.

Special Airport Requirement
    This Airport specific classification requires each candidate to satisfactorily complete a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) 10-year employment history verification which may include a criminal history records check prior to being considered for a position in this class.
Training and Experience
   Any combination of training and experience equivalent to completion of Bachelor's Degree in Aviation Management, Business Administration, Public Administration or a closely related field, two (2) years of experience at a level equivalent to an Airport Operations Supervisor, or six (6) years of experience at a level equivalent to an Airport Operations Supervisor.

Licenses/Certificates
   Possession of a valid State of California driver's license.
