PLANT MECHANIC (3622)

CLASS PURPOSE:
   Under general supervision, performs skilled journey level work of moderate difficulty in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of varied Water Pollution Control Plant equipment. Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Positions in this class report to a Senior Plant Mechanic. This class is the journey level mechanic in the Wastewater Plant Mechanical Maintenance series. It differs from the next higher class of Senior Plant Mechanic in that incumbents of the latter provide lead direction to Plant Mechanics.

QUALIFICATIONS
   Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Education
   Successful completion of high school, General Educational Development (G.E.D.) Certificate, or California Proficiency Certificate.

Experience
   Two (2) years experience as a journey level mechanic, including background in hydraulics, internal combustion engines and sewage treatment plant or closely related equipment.

Acceptable Substitutions
   Four (4) years experience equivalent to a Plant Attendant with the City of San José performing duties assisting Plant Mechanics in the maintenance and repair of Water Pollution Control Plant equipment may be substituted for the two (2) years of journey level experience. There is no substitute for the required education.    

Licenses/Certificates
   As a condition of employment in some designated positions, possession of a valid State of California Class A or B driver's license with applicable endorsements may be required in the performance of job duties.
