CLASS PURPOSE
   Under direction, performs work of considerable difficulty involving the supervision of the maintenance, repair, and overhauling of varied plant equipment and structures at the Water Pollution Control Plant. Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)

• Supervises the work of general maintenance crews engaged in the maintenance repair and overhaul of a variety of plant machinery, structures, and equipment common to sewage treatment plants.
• Supervises the operation of mechanical equipment as required to effect repairs.
• Inspects equipment, structures, and machinery for preventive maintenance purposes and to reduce equipment downtime.
• Supervises requisite welding, cutting, and metal work using either gas or electric arc welding equipment.
• Coordinates the acquisition of special repair parts and/or materials.
• Prepares rough sketches and reads drawings of sub-assemblies and parts, and lists materials needed for repairs.
• Provides subordinate training.
• Prepares written reports relating to equipment and personnel activities.

Typical End Results Include: Ensuring timely completion of work through coordination of work crews; assuring minimum machinery/equipment downtime by establishing preventive maintenance programs; reducing expenditures by determining minimum level or repair/modifications necessary to return machinery/equipment to normal operational status; and maintaining a competent and motivated plant maintenance staff.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
   This is a single position class reporting to the Principal Engineer, Maintenance Services. Supervision is exercised over all personnel assigned to the Plant Mechanical Section. This class differs from the next higher class in terms of responsibility and scope of the job. It differs from the next lower class in terms of level of supervision exercised.

QUALIFICATIONS
   Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision, and the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in troubleshooting, repairing, and overhauling sewage treatment plant equipment and internal combustion engines.
• Ability to effectively supervise subordinates engaged in the maintenance and repair of sewage plant equipment and automotive engines.
• Ability to make sketches of broken/replacement parts.
• Ability to prepare and/or interpret working drawings.

• Knowledge of basic safety methods and principles applicable to plant operation and maintenance.
• Ability to establish effective preventive maintenance programs, maintain records, and make reports.

Education
   Graduation from high school or equivalent (General Educational Diploma [GED] or California Proficiency Certificate).

Experience
   Four (4) years of experience as a journey level mechanic, including one (1) year lead experience at the Senior Plant Mechanic level.

License/Certificates
   Possession of a valid California driver's license.
