CLASS PURPOSE
Under immediate
supervision, performs work of routine difficulty in reading water
meters and recording consumption of water. Performs related work
as required.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)
Reads water consumption figures from meters, and transfers the readings to meter cards, while following an assigned route.
Notes and reports any malfunctioning meter.
Makes routine arithmetic computations to determine the consistency of meter readings, and to detect malfunctioning meters.
Performs minor field repair and service on the water meters.
Learns and performs testing on the water meters in the field, to ensure that the meters are operating properly.
Turns water services on and off at the customer's premises.
Works as a team member in shutting off water when service is discontinued due to delinquent payment.
Answers questions regarding readings and rates.
Receives and reports customer complaints.
Cleans designated shop areas, equipment and devices.
Maintains area surrounding the Water System facilities by clipping plants and bushes.
DISTINGUISHING
CHARACTERISTICS
Incumbents in this
entry level class primarily read water meters, while those in the
next higher class of Water System Technician primarily service
and repair water meters and other water-related equipment. This
class is supervised by the Water System Supervisor, and may
receive lead direction from Water System Technicians and the
Senior Water System Technician, when assisting with repairs and
testing.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Knowledges, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of small hand tools and their use.
Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
Ability to perform simple arithmetic calculations, rapidly and accurately.
Ability to work independently on assigned duties.
Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with water system consumers and the general public.
Ability to write legibly.
Ability to walk long distances and lift heavy (20 - 100 lb.) weights.
Competency Knowledges, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of local street names, locations and geography.
Knowledge of Water System services, policies and procedures.
Ability to read gauges and record figures accurately.
Ability to perform minor field repair and service on the water meters.
Ability to make routine arithmetic computations to determine the consistency of water meter readings.
Training And
Experience
Any combination of training and
experience equivalent to completion of high school.
License/Certificates
Possession of a valid driver's
license authorizing operation of a motor vehicle in California.
As a condition of employment,
incumbents may be required to use their personal vehicles in
performing the job duties.
