CLASS PURPOSE
TYPICAL DUTIES AND
RESULTS (The position may not include all the duties listed,
nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed)
Assigns
and supervises the work of a large technical staff in the preparation of
improvement plans, cost estimates, and specifications for major projects
concerned with traffic signals and traffic signal systems, roadway striping,
channelization, and roadway improvements.
Supervises
the preparation of bidding documents, soliciting of bids, and awarding of
contracts. Administers the contract, interprets plans and specifications,
consults on field problems and signs final completion notices.
Designs
traffic signal facilities for other project engineers, reviews and approves
final design and acts as special consultant on all questions related to
traffic signals.
Negotiates,
administers and approves payment on consulting engineering contracts for
traffic signal design. Develops design criteria, reviews work and approves
traffic signal design of consulting engineers on roadway widening projects.
Trains
and evaluates subordinates using prescribed performance reports and
establishes future performance targets.
Prepares
reports and Council memos on City projects. Organizes, acquires and
maintains office records and files information. Prepares and coordinates
consultant agreements. Represents the City with contractors, general public
and public agencies in matters related to traffic signal design. Reviews

Minimum Knowledges, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge
of mathematics, including algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and drafting.
Knowledge
of basic principles, techniques, and terminology of civil and electrical
engineering as applied to traffic signal design.
Knowledge
of the principles and practices of supervision.
Knowledge
of State and City standard specifications and standard plans.
Knowledge
of land and topographic survey principles used in preparing project
improvement plans.
Ability
to supervise, plan, direct, train and evaluate the work of a large technical
staff.
Ability
to maintain effective public relations
