  SUPERVISING TRAFFIC SIGNAL TECHNICIAN (3718)

CLASS PURPOSE
  Under general direction, performs work of considerable difficulty in supervising other engineering technicians in design drafting, project management, traffic engineering and traffic signal design. Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (The position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed)

  Typical End Results Include: Ensuring a proper design analysis using City design policies, City Standard Specifications, City Standard Details, City Maintenance and Operational Standards; ensuring engineering and related work compatibility with departmental priorities; ensuring increased vehicular capacity and a safe and orderly movement of traffic; ensuring the design and construction and intended use or function of projects conform to City and CALTRANS requirements and specifications.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
  This is a single position class. The incumbent supervises a unit of engineering technicians in the design of traffic signal projects and performs sub-professional engineering and design drafting, traffic engineering, and office engineering work under the direction of a Senior Civil Engineer.

Minimum Knowledges, Skills and Abilities

Competency Knowledges, Skills and Abilities
  Ability to manage a major sub-professional engineering project or program. Ability to independently carry out special assignments and/or analyses.

Training and Experience
  Any combination of training and experience equivalent to completion of high school and nine (9) years of increasingly responsible sub-professional engineering work including three (3) years at a level equivalent to a Senior Engineering Technician with the City of San Jose and including three (3) years of experience in traffic signal design.

Licenses /Certificates
  Possession of a valid California driver's license.
