DARKROOM TECHNICIAN (3731)
CLASS PURPOSE
Under general supervision, performs work of moderate difficulty in photographic film and paper processing and in both black and white and color printing. Performs related work as
required.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (The position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)
- Develops black and white and color film in rolls and cut film.
- Processes black and white and color contact prints and photographic enlargements using standard and semi-automatic and automatic printers and enlargers. Masks, dodges, and burns-in as necessary.
- Mixes developing and fixing solutions according to established formulas and to meet specific needs.
- Cuts and loads film; mounts slides; does copywork; trims and mounts finished prints.
- Maintains darkroom equipment and supplies; keeps inventory controls and records; issues photographic supplies and equipment as required.
- As an on-the-job trainee, takes interior and exterior photos using color and black and white film; takes pictures of crime scenes, accidents, evidence, individuals, groups, special events, and construction projects.
- May occasionally fill in for the photographer in his absence.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This single position class performs journey level darkroom work and reports to the Police Property Supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of the basic principles of photography.
- Knowledge of the various methods of developing and processing black and white and color film and papers.
- Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of the various types of modern photographic and darkroom equipment, including projectors, enlargers, printers, timers, washers, dryers, cameras, tripods, and flash and stroboscopic equipment.
- Ability to perform darkroom work and mix chemical solutions.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
Competency Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of basic mathematics.
- Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
- Ability to perform minor equipment repairs and adjustments.
- Ability to work well for long periods of time while standing.
- Ability to take color and black and white photos under a variety of circumstances and conditions.
- Ability to maintain effective relationships with co-workers.
Education
Successful completion of high school, General Education Degree (GED), or California Proficiency Certificate.
Experience
At least one (1) year of paid full-time experience in darkroom processing.

Licenses/Certificates
Possession of a valid State of California driver’s license.
