CHIEF OF SURVEYS (3783)

CLASS PURPOSE

Under direction, supervises surveying personnel and performs surveying work of considerable difficulty. Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESULTS (Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.)

Typical End Results Include:Effective supervision of field survey crews and office technical staff ensuring proper implementation of Survey Section's field procedures and on-time scheduling of field projects. Updated review and inspection of work performed by private or contract survey crews ensuring accuracy and conformity to establish legal and technical standards. Adequate and necessary staff training and guidance ensuring safe job performance and motivation of section's staff.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Incumbents of this class supervise and manage a large surveying unit, and perform sub-professional surveying work of considerable difficulty under the direction of the Land Surveyor. This class differs from the lower class of the Survey Field Supervisor in that incumbents of the latter supervise a survey crew and perform a variety of sub-professional surveying work of moderate difficulty under the direction of the Chief of Surveys.

Training And Experience

Any combination of training and experience equivalent to successful completion of high school and nine (9) years of increasingly responsible sub-professional engieering/surveying work, including theee (3) years at a level of a Survey Field Supervisor, Senior Engineering Technician, Senior Construction Inspector, or equivalent. (Completion of an Associate Degree in engineering technology equivalent to that given in an accredited California junior college or two years of college engineering courses may be substituted for two (2) years of the remaining required experience.)

License/Certificates

Possession of a Land Surveyor-in-Training certificate and possession of a valid driver's license authorizing the operation of a motor vehicle in the State of California.
